GMS AVID Students Showcase Growth and Achievement During Annual Portfolio Day

Graves Middle School hosted its annual AVID Student Portfolio Day on Friday, May 22, giving eighth-grade AVID students the opportunity to showcase their academic growth, achievements, and personal development.
During the event, 64 AVID students presented curated digital portfolios featuring projects and assignments that reflected both their academic success and personal journey throughout middle school. As part of the experience, students participated in two formal interviews where they discussed their selected work, explained their decision-making process, and shared insights about their strengths, goals, and support systems.
Interviewers evaluated students on professionalism, communication skills, eye contact, enthusiasm, composure, and the depth and clarity of their responses.
The event welcomed a diverse group of interviewers from across the community, including representatives from the Boys and Girls Club, Whittier Public Library, Sonic, Think Together, local professionals, and Graves Middle School alumni. South Whittier School District leadership, including Cabinet and Board members, also attended to support and interview students.
Each interview lasted approximately 10 to 15 minutes, providing students with valuable real-world experience in professional communication, confidence-building, and networking with community leaders.
At the conclusion of the event, the District recognized student participants for their hard work and accomplishments. Each student received a special goodie bag as a token of appreciation and celebration for their dedication, growth, and achievement throughout the AVID program.
Graves Middle School’s AVID Portfolio Day continues to highlight the district’s commitment to college and career readiness while empowering students through meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.
