for Parents and Youth Overcoming Challenges
McKinney-Vento

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (per Title IX, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by Every Student Succeeds Act) defines homeless as foster Children and youth, who lack a “fixed, regular and adequate” nighttime address or living under the following conditions:

  • Doubled Up or Tripled Up
  • Motels, Hotels, or weekly rate housing
  • Trailer parks or camping grounds 
  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings
  • Living in emergency or transitional shelters 
  • Runaway or pushed-out youth or migratory children

Under this legislation, a student is guaranteed enrollment in school, as well as, the opportunity to benefit from a variety of services to help meet educational needs. Services may include the following based on need and supply availability:

  • Remain in their school of origin
  • Transportation to school of origin 
  • Immediate enrollment in their local comprehensive public school regardless if they do not have all required documentation. 
  • Enroll in school, even without proof of TDAP immunization. 
  • Enroll in the same or equivalent classes as those they took at their old school, even if transferring mid semester. 
  • Equal participation in extracurricular activities regardless of try-ots or sign-up deadlines. 
  • Priority placement into before and after school programs. 
  • Backpacks and school supplies upon request
  • Free and reduced lunch program at school
  • Assistance in finding health, welfare and other county resources

  • Interfaith Food Center 
    Clients receive free weekly nutritional food assistance through the Food Distribution Program. Low-income families and individuals who live in Whittier, La Mirada and Santa Fe Springs are eligible for bagged groceries weekly.
