SWSD May Board Meeting Recap

The South Whittier School District held its monthly Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, May 19, where trustees and attendees recognized outstanding student achievement and received an update on the District’s Community Schools and Expanded Learning Programs.
Graves Middle School Masonic Seven Award Recognition
Graves Middle School Principal Mr. Hernandez and Vice Principal Mrs. Torres honored seven students who were selected to receive the prestigious Masonic Seven Award for their academic dedication, leadership, character, and citizenship.
As part of the recognition process, each student submitted an essay describing how they exemplify GMS P.R.I.D.E., which stands for being positive, respectful, independent, disciplined, and empathetic. During the presentation, Mrs. Torres shared excerpts from each student’s essay before presenting the awards.

Community Schools & Expanded Learning Programs Presentation
Karina Hartl, Director of Community Schools, and Gabriela Delgado, Coordinator of ELOP/Community Schools, presented an update on the District’s Community Schools initiative and Expanded Learning Programs.
The presentation highlighted that the 2025–2026 school year marked the first year of a five-year implementation plan focused on building a strong foundation for Community Schools throughout the District.
Key areas of focus included family and community engagement through parent workshops, family events, and leadership opportunities. Integrated student supports through community partnerships, health and mental health services, and basic needs assistance. Lastly, collaborative leadership through advisory councils, collaborative structures, and opportunities for student and family voice.
Presenters also shared updates on the District’s Expanded Learning Programs and growing student participation. Programs currently offered include high-dose tutoring, sports, robotics, cheer, musical theatre, art, mariachi, and additional enrichment opportunities.
A total of 2,388 students are currently enrolled in expanded learning programs across the District.
The next monthly Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 16.
