SWSD Hosts Annual District Spelling Bee

South Whittier School District hosted its annual District Spelling Bee on Thursday, January 22, at Loma Vista Elementary School. The event brought together the district’s top student spellers for an evening of academic competition and celebration.
Participants included the top two spellers from each school in grades four through eight. Prior to the districtwide competition, each South Whittier school conducted its own Spelling Bee to determine which students would advance to represent their campus at the district level.
Students competed through multiple rounds of increasingly challenging words in front of a packed auditorium filled with family members, staff, and classmates. The competition was judged by a distinguished panel that included Superintendent Dr. Gonzales, members of the district’s administrative team, and South Whittier teachers.
After several intense rounds, Savannah Thompson, a fifth-grade student from Loma Vista Elementary School, was named the district Spelling Bee champion. Leonel Esparza, a fifth-grade student from McKibben Elementary School, earned second place, and Britanny Hernandez, a seventh-grade student from Graves Middle School, placed third.
As the district champion, Savannah Thompson will advance to represent South Whittier School District at the Los Angeles County Spelling Bee.
South Whittier School District congratulates all students who participated in this year’s Spelling Bee. Their dedication, preparation, and academic excellence made the event a success and reflect the district’s continued commitment to student achievement.
