SWSD Holds Second Community Schools Advisory Meeting

South Whittier School District held a Community Schools Advisory Meeting on Thursday, November 13, at the District Office. The purpose of the meeting was to review Community Schools priorities and goals, examine the budget, and gather feedback and input from attendees.
Director of Community Schools, Karina Hartl, facilitated the meeting and began by emphasizing the importance of building meaningful relationships and engaging the community to better meet the needs of students and families.
“Community Schools are built on relationships, and your role is vital to our schools and community,” Ms. Hartl shared. “Every single person here brings something to the table.”
Ms. Hartl presented the Community Schools budget, which totals $7.8 million over the next five years to ensure long-term stability. The majority of the budget will support salaries for Community Schools staff, which includes twenty-five positions. Additional funding will support professional development, operating services, materials and supplies, and indirect costs.
Following the presentation, attendees participated in interactive stations, each representing a key Community Schools goal. These goals included enhancing safety and school climate, increasing access to resources, and improving outcomes for middle school students, with a particular focus on long-term English Learners. Participants were asked to assess each goal using three tiers: Tier One—what is currently in place, Tier Two—what is partially in place, and Tier Three—what is missing.
After rotating through all stations, attendees reconvened to share insights, collaborate, and provide collective feedback.
This meeting marked the second in a series of Community Schools Advisory Meetings scheduled throughout the school year.
