California Highway Patrol Brings Safety and Drug Awareness to South Whittier Schools

During Red Ribbon Week, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) visited every school in the South Whittier School District to present engaging and educational safety assemblies. These presentations were designed to empower students to make smart, safe, and drug-free choices.
CHP officers spoke to students about the importance of saying no to drugs and making positive decisions that support their future goals. They emphasized how substance use can interfere with achieving dreams, whether in school, sports, or personal development. Students were encouraged to stay focused, work hard, and remain committed to their aspirations.
To make the lessons interactive and memorable, officers conducted a variety of demonstrations. One highlight was the K-9 unit presentation, where students watched a police dog in action as it successfully located hidden scents, a favorite moment for many in the crowd.
At Graves Middle School, students and staff also experienced a special demonstration using impairment goggles, which simulate the effects of being under the influence. Both a teacher and a student attempted to make a basketball shot while wearing the goggles, only to miss widely. The exercise gave students a firsthand look at how impaired vision and coordination can make even simple tasks difficult.
Through these hands-on experiences, CHP reinforced its message of safety, responsibility, and the importance of staying drug-free. The visit served as a powerful reminder that making smart choices today helps pave the way for a bright, successful tomorrow.
